Homemade Sloppy Joe

Easy to make Homemade Sloppy Joe recipe in a thick and hearty simple sauce from scratch. Ground beef is cooked in a tangy tomato based sauce that is naturally gluten free thanks to the use of quick oats to thicken the sauce. We love Sloppy Joes on our Homemade Hamburger Buns toasted but you can always grab the good ole soft white buns from the store that remind us of childhood to save time.

With Fall quickly approaching there is nothing quite like a warm hearty sandwich for an easy dinner after a long day whether its our Italian Sloppy Joes, Pepperoni Pizza Grilled Cheese Sandwiches, hearty Philly Cheesesteak Sandwiches, or this classic Sloppy Joe recipe you can't go wrong.

I made this Sloppy Joe recipe last Thursday, because they are always a hit in our house. The kids request them all the time.

I love how easy homemade Sloppy Joes are to make. It's an easy dinner for a busy weeknight, or when I need to feed the Hubby and his friends when they're watching football. No slaving here!

I have met a few people who detest Sloppy Joes. However, I have yet to have a chance to make them try these delicious babies. I have yet to understand what's not to like about ground hamburger with all sorts of goodies smothered with cheese over top on a toasted bun but if I figure it out I'll let you know.

These taste so much better then even Manwich. Just for the record my kids will picket if I serve the Manwich. 

This recipe could be totally gluten free if using gluten free buns. They are totally delicious either way. 

Here's how I made these Sloppy Joes

Sautéed onions in a cast iron skillet with a uncooked ground beef with minced garlic on top.

Sauté:
  • 1 tablespoon Olive Oil
  • 1/2 whole Onion, Diced 
Until onions are starting to caramelize then add:
  • 1 1/2 pounds Ground Beef
  • 2 cloves Garlic, Minced
Break up hamburger and cook until no longer pink.

Stir in:
  • 1 whole Bell Pepper, Seeded and Diced
  • 28 ounces Canned Tomatoes with Juice
  • 1/4 cup Quick Oats
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 teaspoons Chili Powder
  • 2 teaspoons Smoked Paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cumin 
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • Pepper to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon Sugar
Stir well. Reduce heat to low, and cover. Cook for 15 minutes or until mixture has thickened and become saucy.

Serve Sloppy Joe mixture over hamburger buns toasted or plain. You can top with grated cheese if desired.

Homemade Sloppy Joes

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1/2 whole Large Onion, Diced
  • 1 1/2 pounds Ground Beef
  • 2 cloves Garlic, Minced
  • 1 whole Bell Pepper, Seeded And Diced
  • 28 ounces Canned Diced Tomatoes With Juice
  • 1/4 cup Quick Oats
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 teaspoon Chili Powder
  • 2 teaspoons Smoke Paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Granulated Garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Ground Cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon Sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper or to taste
  • 5 whole Hamburger Buns or Large Crusty Dinner Rolls, Toasted (For Gluten Free Use Gluten Free Buns)
  • 2 cups Grated Cheese, Optional

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add onion and sauté until caramelized.
  2. Add ground beef and fresh garlic, cook until hamburger is cooked through.
  3. Add bell pepper, tomatoes, quick oats, chili powder, worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, smoked paprika, cumin, pepper, and sugar.
  4. Stir well, and reduce heat to low.
  5. Cook for about 15 minutes or until mixture has thickened and become saucy.
  6. Serve over toasted buns topped with cheese (optional).

  3. We used to make sloppy joes every time we were camping, but it always came from that spice mix that you get at the store. LOVE the recipe you have with these, and I have a feeling that they will make the entire family happy. And I'm not going to wait till we go camping!

  4. My husband loves sloppy joes but I get so frustrated. His mom didn't really cook when he was growing up so he actually prefers the taste of Manwich which I refuse to serve lol. I'll give these a shot to see if I can finally change his mind!
