Best Yellow Birthday Cake Recipe

Monday, February 1, 2021
A from scratch moist, tender, buttery, and light Yellow Birthday Cake recipe! Better than a box mix and easy to make.

A slice of Yellow Birthday Cake with Mocha Frosting on a white plate with the whole cake to the right in the background on a cake stand.
I just finished updating the recipe for this Best Yellow Birthday Cake with Mocha Frosting. It was originally published January 9th, 2014. It's still a family favorite!

I've spent a lot of hours working on the BEST Yellow Birthday Cake recipe. I've tasted one to many dry or tasteless yellow cake recipes that never compare to the moist flavorful yellow cake found in the cute local bakeries that are a must for Birthday celebrations.

But fear not my friends I have finally perfected a moist Yellow Cake that is the absolute best! Then as if that's not good enough I covered it in a delicious Mocha Buttercream Frosting for an adult spin on the childhood favorite!

Swoon.. There's just something amazingly delicious about Yellow Cake with a Chocolate Mocha Buttercream Frosting.

Even LJ stated he doesn't care for frosting usually but he loved the Mocha Buttercream Frosting because it wasn't too sweet, just the right amount of chocolate, and coffee.

I made this cake specially for Lorna to celebrate her 14th Birthday yesterday.

It just wouldn't be a Birthday Celebration without the Best Yellow Cake possible and this recipe nails it!

I hope everyone had a fabulous Mother's Day. Colt and the kids sneaked out of the house early in the morning to run to the store and surprised me with a gorgeous bouquet they assembled. It has to be one of the prettiest bouquets I've ever received!

They were a little disappointed to come home and find me awake because the dogs had a dog fight over a bone outside my bedroom door. I still don't know why they were choosing to fight over it because their was a larger bone in the other room, crazy dogs!

Then they assembled a picnic including this favorite Summer Berry Fruit Salad with Honey Lime Glaze and took me to a favorite park next to a lake to enjoy the gorgeous weather we've been having.

This fruit salad happens to be a summer time favorite with sweet raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, kiwi, black grapes, peaches and seedless clementine oranges tossed with lime-honey dressing.

The lime and honey make the flavors of the fruit pop and will leave your taste buds tingling for more.

Banana Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting

Saturday, April 7, 2018
Easy to make Banana Cake recipe with a lightly sweetened Cream Cheese Frosting.

Banana Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting from Serena Bakes Simply From Scratch.

I'm pretty sure I've been food driven my whole life.

I can still remember the first time I tasted Banana Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting, it was at my Aunts wedding and I was probably about 8 or 9 years old. It's was so much lighter then banana bread but still perfectly moist with lots of banana flavor and the cream cheese frosting was sweetened to perfection.

This Banana Cake is perfectly moist and easy to make. It's dense and moist but still light similar to a really good carrot cake. It has a strong banana flavor that pairs perfectly with the lightly sweetened cream cheese frosting.

It's the perfect use for all of your overly ripe bananas.

Here's how I make my favorite Banana Cake:

Chocolate Pudding Cheesecake

Thursday, September 28, 2017
Chocolate Pudding Cheesecake recipe is no bake cheesecake meets chocolate pudding is the perfect dessert for Easter, Thanksgiving or Christmas from Serena Bakes Simply From Scratch.

I made Chocolate Pudding Cheesecake last week when I was having a massive dilemma..

I was craving chocolate pudding, and cheesecake, but wanted something that didn't take hours to make like traditional cheesecake. So I finally decided on Chocolate Pudding Cheesecake, since one of the most requested desserts in our house is Banana Pudding Cheesecake.

I figured it would be equally as delish, and I was right. The cream cheese adds a certain richness without being overly sweet which I love, and the family does too.

I made the Chocolate Pudding from scratch because that's usually what I do, and it really doesn't save that much time using a chocolate pudding box. Plus I like a pretty prominent chocolate flavor that can only be achieved with a scratch pudding.

It ended up tasting like magic in a pie plate rich, creamy, smooth, with the best chocolate pudding meets no bake cheesecake. If you're a serious chocolate lover it will probably leave you a little weak in the knees.

Blueberry Crisp

Friday, June 30, 2017
Blueberry Crisp is an easy to make recipe. Perfect for dessert. Great with frozen or fresh blueberries making this a year around favorite from Serena Bakes Simply From Scratch.

I had a giant bag of frozen blueberries needing to be used so I decided to make a Blueberry Crisp, but fresh can always be used.

Frozen blueberries were a staple in my Granny's freezer growing up. I remember going to pick berries in the summer to stock the freezer.

She would make Blueberry Pies, Blueberry Syrup for Pancakes, Blueberry Muffins, and of course an occasional Blueberry Crisp throughout the year with her frozen stash.

The blueberries are so naturally sweet, and it's so simple to make. It has a generous amount of crunchy crisp topping to go perfectly with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream.

To me it just wouldn't be summer without Crisp and Cobblers.

Tiramisu Angel Food Cake

Wednesday, January 11, 2017
Tiramisu Angel Food Cake consists of light airy layers of angel food cake, liquor infused espresso, creamy marscapone filling, and topped with chocolate curls is a favorite dessert recipe from Serena Bakes Simply From Scratch.

If we go out to eat and Tiramisu's on the dessert menu it's almost always my guaranteed pick.

Tiramisu is traditionally made with ladyfingers, but I used Angel Food Cake soaked in liquor infused espresso or strong coffee could be used, and then covered in creamy marscapone mixture that's hard to keep from eating straight out of the bowl.

Tiramisu Angel Food Cake is best made at least 8 hours ahead of time so the flavors can mingle in the fridge but an overnight is even better. It holds up exceptionally well made a day ahead of time.

In Italian Tiramisu translates into "pick me up" and this dessert is sure to pick you up at the end of the day.

Tiramisu Cake is a slice of heaven for the taste buds.

Ham Black-Eyed Pea Soup With Collard Greens

Friday, November 18, 2016
Ham Black-Eyed Pea Soup With Collard Greens a great use for leftover holiday ham!

Brrr... It's been rather chilly the last few days, leaving me craving any kind of hearty soup. I love Ham Black-Eyed Pea Soup with Collard Greens since it's thick and creamy. The perfect comfort food on a cold day.

If your lucky enough to have leftover ham after the holidays Ham Black-Eyed Pea Soup with Collard Greens is a favorite use in our house, and a must have for  New Years Day. I like adding the sautéed collard greens to the top for an additional pop of flavor.

According to superstition Black-Eyed Peas will bring you prosperity in the New Year. I'm not one to mess with tradition when it entails a hearty bowl of comfort.

Comforting, and hearty, the perfect soup to warm your bones at the end of a cold day.

Cheesy Ham and Broccoli Pot Pie

Monday, November 7, 2016
Cheesy Ham and Broccoli Pot Pie

It just doesn't get much better then Cheesy Ham and Broccoli Pot Pie.

The cheesy gravy, veggies loaded with lots of broccoli, and flaky tender crust makes my taste buds do a happy dance.

What I love most about Ham Pot Pie is it's a great way to use up leftover ham from the holidays.

I'm always looking for different ways to use up the leftovers so the kids don't become board. If I'm not lucky enough to have leftover ham I will use a ham steak.

Either way it's a must make!

Here's how I make our family favorite Ham and Broccoli Pot Pie:

Grannies Clam Dip Recipe

Sunday, September 13, 2015
A favorite Old Fashioned Clam Dip recipe and rendition of Grannies Homemade Clam Dip is easy to make and a family favorite for dipping chips and veggies. A favorite appetizer for parties, Thanksgiving, Christmas and of coarse your net potluck.

Grannies Old Fashioned Clam Dip Recipe is a homemade favorite for parties! A favorite appetizer recipe for Super Bowl from Serena Bakes Simply From Scratch.

We are celebrating National Grandparents Day for this weeks #SundaySupper. In memory of my sweet Granny because she was simply one of the most amazing people I've ever met I decided to share my rendition of her famous Homemade Clam Dip.

Grannies Clam Dip isn't actually her recipe since she passed away before I had the opportunity for her to share it with me but my version of a dip she made often for a weekend snack served with ruffled potato chips and lots of veggies.

It was as much a staple in our home as Puff Pancakes and Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup. It was always a favorite and never lasted long enough.

I choose to name it Grannies Clam Dip since I knew it would pass the test of her picky palate and when I think of Clam Dip I always think of her clam dip.

Some people idol a celebrity or super hero but to me my Grannies is the one I admire.

She was amazing, strong, loving and kind.

Granny set the foundation for my love of the kitchen with all the amazing recipes she served.

Her heart was as beautiful as they come with patience I can only hope will come with age. She was always so unselfish and giving in every way imaginable!

She spent endless hours helping me grow into the person that I am today.

With that said I hope you enjoy the recipe for Grannies Clam Dip as my family does.

Sparkling Strawberry Grapefruit Moscato Punch #SundaySupper

Sunday, May 3, 2015
Sparkling Strawberry Grapefruit Moscato Punch is perfect for Easter or Mothers Day brunch.

Compensation was provided by Gallo Family Vineyards via Sunday Supper, LLC. The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and are not indicative of the opinions or positions of Gallo Family Vineyards.

Today I'm celebrating National Moscato Day with my #SundaySupper Family and Gallo Family Vineyards.

I couldn't think of a better way to enjoy the celebration then sharing my recipe for Sparkling Strawberry Grapefruit Moscato Punch. Colt and I have made different variations of this punch over the years and it's always been a hit!

We love to use Moscato Wine in punch for it's sweet flavor, limiting the need for much additional sugar and it's wonderful complementation to the strawberries and grapefruit.

On this particular occasion I chose to use Gallo Family Vineyards Red Moscato for it gorgeous ruby red color along with delicious notes of berries and citrus. I find the Red Moscato to be perfectly sweet but not too sweet to sip alone. It helps give the punch it's deliciously dark fuchsia color.

I added Pink Moscato Champagne to tingle the tongue a little, strawberries, raspberries, and freshly squeezed grapefruit juice to compliment the Red Moscato.

A refreshing cocktail full of flavor perfect for Mother's Day, Barbecues and Holidays!

I know you will enjoy sipping Sparkling Strawberry Grapefruit Moscato Punch as much as we do.

Seafood Risotto

Saturday, February 7, 2015
Easy Seafood Risotto for 2 is a delicious special dinner for Valentines Day, a datenight in, or double for company. Creamy cheesy risotto with lobster tails, shrimp, scallops, mussels, and clams makes this not only delicious but has a gorgeous presentation.

Creamy Seafood Risotto with lobster, mussels, clams, shrimp and scallops from Serena Bakes Simply From Scratch.
We decided to make Seafood Risotto to have a date night in for Valentine's Day.

After 15 years of marriage I know how important a date night is not only on Valentine's Day, but at least a few times a month. When the kids were little we spent many Valentine's Days putting them to bed a little early and making something a little extra special for dinner.

Our kids are much older now but we still choose to have date nights in while they are gone. Some of our most memorable dates have been at home working together in the kitchen. Usually when we are making something for our date night we try to recreate a favorite we've had out. This Seafood Risotto contains all the great makings to a wonderful night.

I've always found something so romantic about the creamy texture of Risotto and you can never go wrong with Seafood.

2 glasses of Sparkling Pomegranate Berry Punch with a Pitcher of Sparkling Pomegranate Berry Bunch in the back.

With the Holidays here and Christmas quickly approaching I figured there was no better time then the present to share this Sparkling Pomegranate Berry Punch aka Jingle Juice.

This weeks theme is Libational Recipes and with Rum and Pink Moscato Champagne I think we have it covered.

Pomegranate, cranberry and raspberries make this a smooth sipper with a gorgeous color perfect for brunch, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years and any other special occasion!

I like to soak the berries in the rum prior to making the punch for a boozy little treat in the bottom of your glass.

Be warned to tread lightly and sip slowly these go down faster then you'll realize.

Sausage Stuffed Mushrooms

Monday, December 30, 2013
Sausage Stuffed Mushrooms
Oh my these were so good!
   You have to make 'em!
Colt and I assembled these little beauties before yesterdays Seahawks game and they didn't last long.
Even Lorna the proclaimed mushroom hater ate way more then her fair share.
When she was little she insisted on the fact she hated mushrooms so I would add them to things like a brown rice and shiitake mushroom soup and tell her they were calamari..
She gobbled the mushrooms right up.. Ha..Ha..
I'm probably a little bit evil when it comes to food.
I've converted several of the kids friends to eating more then spaghetti noodles with butter with the simple explanation that to have dinner at our house you have to try a bite of everything.
One of L.J.'s friends still laughs when he has dinner at our house because he discovered he loves salmon..
Ok any who back to the mushrooms...
Colt had set a few mushrooms aside because the boys were at their friends house playing.
So when they returned they were rather disappointed when they couldn't find the Sausage Stuffed Mushrooms he set aside for them.
Fast forward about 10 minutes and Colt grabs the leftover Stuffed Mushrooms and proclaims he's eating the last of the mushrooms since the boys didn't eat them.
Lorna and I both yell no at the same time and say, "The boys were searching all over for those."
He had these little delicacies  hidden in the microwave, sneaky, sneaky..
Mas devoured the last of 'em.
These were so good I'm about to go out on a huge limb and say these were the best Stuffed Mushrooms I've ever had!
We've ate a lot of stuffed Mushrooms over the years and we all agreed these were over the top good.

Brown Butter Snickerdoodles is for sure a favorite Snickerdoodle Recipe and must have Christmas Cookie. The brown butter really kicks these iconic cookies up a notch from Serena Bakes Simply From Scratch.

The holidays are fast approaching and the weather in Washington has become a bit chilly lately. Perfect weather for Brown Butter Snickerdoodles with hot cocoa or milk!

Snickerdoodles have always brought back fond memories as a child with one of my neighborhood best friends Emily growing up. At a young age we had discussed snickerdoodles on a regular basis followed by a lot of mess's in her Mother's kitchen, sorry Marie! Marie is the one who would make Boccone Dolce.

Soft and chewy Snickerdoodles with a slight nutty flavor from the browned butter makes these a Christmas Cookie favorite for Santa.

Oh, did I mention covered in cinnamon and sugar. If you aren't following at this point we might need to end our friendship. Just say'n. Oh, and let's not forget the totally delicious crinkly top!

Here's how I make my recipe for Brown Butter Snickerdoodle Cookies.
